The Largest Known Prime

The record prime has over 41 million digits — 2^136279841 − 1, found by GIMPS in October 2024.

The largest known prime (as of late 2024) has 41,024,320 digits.

It is the Mersenne prime 2^136279841 − 1, discovered in October 2024 by Luke Durant using GIMPS (Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search).

Scale: That’s about 6 times the total number of letters in all seven Harry Potter books — so one number, in decimal, is longer than the whole series many times over.

The previous record was about 24.8 million digits. This new prime is longer by roughly 16 million digits, a huge jump for a single discovery.
