The Loneliness of the Number Two

Why the only even prime is basically the oddest number of all.

Being a prime number is already a bit of an isolating experience. You’re only divisible by 1 and yourself. You don’t have many factors to hang out with. But within that elite club, there is one member who is truly an outsider: Two.

The Only Even Prime

Every other prime number is odd. 3, 5, 7, 11… they all share that “odd” DNA. But 2 is the black sheep. It’s the only even number that manages to be prime.

As soon as a number is even, it’s divisible by 2, which usually disqualifies it from being prime. But since 2 is only divisible by 1 and 2, it sneaks through the gates.

Why 2 is a Trendsetter

Without 2, the number line would be a much more boring place. It’s the smallest prime, the first prime, and the foundation of binary logic. Every time you use a computer, you’re essentially talking in a language invented by the number 2.

Fun Fact

Did you know that 2 and 3 are the only consecutive prime numbers? After that, they’re always at least two units apart. This is because every other prime is odd, and you can’t have two odd numbers in a row!

Should You Get a Prime Like 2?

While 2 is already taken (by history itself), there are trillions of other primes waiting for a home. They might not be even, but they’re just as special.
